My background is in community education as a tutor for over twenty years alongside being a studio based artist. For many years based in Yorkshire and Derbyshire.  I have exhibited and worked collaboratively as an artist and tutor and designed and delivered many courses.

The pandemic and subsequent lockdown brought all this to an end.  This prompted new ways of working in which I designed and delivered on-line courses  Art & Nature, Painting & Drawing from the Land, Mixed Media techniques and Drawing.  This situation also rekindled my dream of living in the highlands, a place I left part of my soul in over thirty years previously, of being in a wild place to be creative and to share this with others through my teaching.

A deep connection with nature is the cornerstone for my artistic practice and expressing this creatively, the basis for my teaching.   Walking the hills, telling the stories of place, working with the land, making my own paints from pigments, charcoal from the willow I grow and ink from foraging.  I hold creative space for others to explore materials and techniques, to connect with nature and their own creativity in this wild and magical place.

“So, here I am.  I am honoured to be able offer courses and workshops from my  studio here on the beautiful Isle of Skye.”

Very enjoyable class

I joined Karen’s class on line during the COVID pandemic lockdown.
I have really enjoyed working with her. Karen is approachable, communicates well, has a wealth of experience, gives practical tips, and co-ordinates on-line sessions efficiently.
I would recommend her as an ‘on-line’  teacher both novices, and more advanced learners.

Continuous artistic development

I have been a student under Karen for many years now and still continue to develop my art under her expert guidance. As a teacher Karen is very patient, knowledgeable and I find that there is always something new to learn. The class is very friendly and we all exchange ideas with Karen’s support.

Great online classes

Karen offers great on line classes. Karen is very knowledgeable and offers practical advice and ideas to support your artistic projects. She offers specific assistance when you need it or you can just use the time to develop your own project and ask for help as required in a separate classroom. Some of the artists who attend are beginners like myself and there are others who are more experienced. But everyone is very supportive and you also learn from what others are trying to achieve. I throughly recommend it
